PORT OF POOLE CELEBRATES MILESTONE IN DECARBONISATION EFFORTS

Yesterday the Port of Poole celebrated a significant milestone in its decarbonisation journey with an event held at Bournemouth University marking the near-conclusion of the project to develop an ambitious Decarbonisation Plan for the Port of Poole Maritime Industrial Cluster.

The project received grant funding from the Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plans (LIDP) competition from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in collaboration with Innovate Uk – UK Research and Innovation,  which provided up to £6 million in grant funding to a number of Cluster projects across the UK to decarbonise and reduce their emissions.

Over the past 11 months, Poole Harbour Commissioners has worked in collaboration with 7 other partners including BCP Council, Brittany Ferries, Bournemouth University’s Centre for Sustainable Business Transformation, Condor Ferries, Jenkins Marine, SMS Marine and Sunseeker International, and working closely with engineering company Royal Haskoning DHV and all tenants on the Port of Poole estate, to develop a Decarbonisation Plan for the Port of Poole Maritime Industrial Cluster. The project is developing a roadmap for reducing emissions across the Port of Poole, which will be finalised in the new year.

The event brought together around 50 attendees, including a wide range of stakeholders from the maritime, supply chain, academic, and government sectors, to reflect on the progress made and discuss the next steps in reducing emissions across the Port of Poole Cluster’s operations.

The event featured a presentation on the project’s key findings and methodology for developing a Baseline Emissions Inventory and Decarbonisation Roadmap, and presentations from stakeholders including the South West Net Zero Hub and BCP Council on Tackling the Climate and Ecological crisis in partnership across BCP, and the development of a Local Area Energy Plan for the BCP area.

Commenting on the event, Captain Brian Murphy, CEO of Poole Harbour Commissioners, said:
“This project represents a vital step in the decarbonisation of the Port of Poole and its maritime industrial cluster. The support from this funding opportunity has enabled us to explore innovative solutions, and events like yesterday’s highlight the value of collaboration in achieving our shared environmental goals.”
