06 Jul PLANNED CESSATION OF FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN POOLE AND CHERBOURG

Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) has expressed its disappointment at the planned cessation of the passenger and freight ferry service between Poole and Cherbourg operated by Brittany Ferries. This long-standing link has served residents, businesses, and visitors since 1985.
The final sailing from Poole to Cherbourg is scheduled for 31 October 2026.
Commenting on this decision by Brittany Ferries, Captain Brian Murphy, Chief Executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, said:
“We are naturally disappointed to see the loss of the Poole–Cherbourg ferry service, which has been an important connection for the town, the wider region, and our valued customers. This route has supported tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between the south coast of England and northern France, and its absence will be felt across our community.”
The Cherbourg route has played a key role in Poole’s maritime offering, contributing to the diversity and resilience of port operations while providing a convenient alternative to other cross-Channel routes. Poole has also been twinned with Cherbourg since 1977, reflecting the long-standing friendship and close ties between the two towns.
Despite this setback, PHC remains optimistic and sees this moment as a catalyst for new opportunities.
“While we regret the loss of this service, we also recognise that it creates a clear opportunity for other ferry operators to take over the short western channel crossing. Poole Harbour is a highly capable, well-located port with strong infrastructure, a skilled workforce providing exemplar service levels, and a proven customer base. We are actively engaging with potential operators and are ready to support new services that will help restore and grow cross-channel connectivity.”
PHC continues to work closely with stakeholders, including local authorities, tourism bodies, and commercial partners, to ensure that Poole remains an attractive and competitive port for maritime services.

Poole Harbour Commissioners remain open to discussions with ferry operators interested in developing new services and will provide all necessary support to facilitate their introduction whilst continuing the ongoing partnership with Brittany Ferries for the fast ferry service to Guernsey and on to St Malo and DFDS for the fast ferry service to Jersey.
