PHC are delighted that the Steamship Shieldhall, a key vessel in the National Historic Fleet and the largest working steamship in Britain, has returned to Poole for a series of special events.
Built in 1955, the Shieldhall was originally designed to carry treated sludge down the River Clyde to be disposed of at sea. It is one of the last remaining examples of the classic Clyde-built steamships, known for their robust construction and engineering excellence. Now preserved and operated by a team of dedicated volunteers, the Shieldhall serves as a living reminder of Britain’s rich maritime heritage.
Some of the trips and events on offer include:
Bournemouth Air Festival Viewing Trips – On Thursday 29th and Friday 30th August, Shieldhall is offering special trips from Poole Quay to view the Bournemouth Air Festival.
Jurassic Coast Cruise – On Saturday 31st August, Shieldhall will embark on a scenic cruise to the Jurassic Coast, with live entertainment from the Wareham Whalers Shanty Band. The trip will offer stunning views of landmarks such as Old Harry Rocks, Durlston Castle, and St. Aldhelm’s Head, all while enjoying traditional sea shanties.
Return Trip to Southampton – To conclude its visit, Shieldhall will set sail back to Southampton on Sunday 1st September. This one-way trip provides views of Poole Harbour, the Needles, and other coastal sights.
