BLUE LAGOON IMPROVEMENT WORKS TO ENHANCE ENVIRONMENT AND RESILIENCE IN POOLE HARBOUR

Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) has announced plans to undertake modest repair and improvement works to the bund wall at the Blue Lagoon, with works due to start imminently.

The Blue Lagoon is a valued and sensitive part of the harbour environment and these works are designed to maintain its structural integrity while supporting the long-term health of the surrounding habitat.

As part of the works, PHC has commissioned an independent ecological and environmental appraisal of the Blue Lagoon, with an aim to assess the current condition of the site and identify opportunities for environmental enhancement.

These proactive steps come at a time of increased focus on environmental protection and restoration across the harbour, following the 2023 oil spill incident. As confirmed by the Environment Agency in March 2026, a £6.1 million enforcement undertaking has been secured to address the environmental impact of the spill and support recovery initiatives across Poole Harbour.

Captain Brian Murphy, PHC’s Chief Executive, said: “Poole Harbour is a highly designated, protected site of international and national importance, recognised primarily as a Special Protection Area for rare birds and a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its diverse habitats.

PHC promote safe and sustainable use of the harbour, while balancing the demands on its natural resources, minimising risk, and resolving conflicts of interest.  It is vital that we conserve its unique ecosystem, which includes mudflats, salt marshes, and seagrass beds. The funding, being directed towards conservation, improved access to the harbour and environmental initiatives, will deliver lasting benefits for Poole Harbour and the communities that use it for both business and leisure.”

The Blue Lagoon project forms part of PHC’s broader programme of environmental management and sustainability activity, including contributions to harbour-wide conservation initiatives and ongoing development of its Aquatic Management Plan.
