Poole Harbour Aquatic Management Plan 2006
www.pooleharbouraqmp.co.uk

Since January 2006 a project has been underway to revise and update the Aquatic Management Plan for Poole Harbour which was first produced in 1994. After considerable input from members of the Poole Harbour Steering Group and other key stakeholders, and following a full public consultation, Project Officer William Drake, is now pleased to announce the publication of the new Plan.

The overall aim of the plan is:

"To promote the safe and sustainable use of Poole Harbour, balancing the demands on its natural resources, minimising risk and resolving conflicts of interest."

The Plan is seen as being forward thinking in its approach to coastal management and provides a framework for the effective, co-ordinated management of the Harbour and the Poole Harbour Special Protection Area (SPA) as well as serving as a Management Scheme for the European Marine Site (EMS). It also covers the present and future needs of nature conservation, recreation and commercial use and other legitimate interests of the Harbour.

This exciting project has been made possible thanks to funding from all the Poole Harbour Steering Group members, but key funding has come from The Crown Estate (owners of most of the harbour bed), who have provided a substantial contribution through their Marine Stewardship Fund.

Copies of the full Plan and a Non-Technical Summary can be download from the project website www.pooleharbouraqmp.co.uk

Poole Harbour Boat Race
Board Game

'Learn while they play", is the philosophy behind a fun and educational board game that Poole Harbour Commissioners have produced for the benefit of local schools.

The game was the brainchild of one of the Commissioners, Sarah Welton, who worked with local illustrator Tim Oliver to produce this fun and informative learning tool. It has been designed so that it covers as many relevant issues relating to the port and Harbour as possible. To enhance the educational value of the game, a 'Did you know that...' list of facts and 'The Poole Harbour Race in your Classroom' factsheet have been prepared to accompany it.

The game and the accompanying sheets are to be given free to all Primary, First and Middle schools in the Poole/Purbeck area at the beginning of the autumn term. It will also be distributed free to sailing clubs, field study and activity centres and other appropriate clubs and organisations in the area.

In addition, the game can be downloaded from the PHC website so it can be printed out and played at home. A copy is also being given to Brittany Ferries, who will make the game available in the children's area on their ship the 'Barfleur'.

Sally Porter of Poole Harbour Commissioners said:

'We have produced the game to give to the local schools as a tool which they can use in the classroom as part of the national curriculum to allow local children to find out a little bit more about Poole Harbour in a fun way. We have tried to incorporate as many of the different activities and things that go on in the harbour as possible, especially sea safety, after all, sea safety is as important as road safety when you live here . It has certainly been challenging trying to get so many messages across in one game.'

Notes for Editors:

The game is being launched at Longfleet Combined School with the year 6 students on Tuesday 23rd January 2007 at 10am. Please contact Sally Porter for further details.
