There is a mandatory speed limit of 10 knots throughout
the harbour, and 6 knots in the Little Channel and Holes Bay. There is an
advisory speed limit of 6 knots throughout the quiet areas, i.e. South of
Brownsea Island, and most of the Wareham Channel.
The speed limits are strictly regulated and there are
up to nine police craft on the water at busy times to enforce the byelaws.
In 2000, 3 prosecutions were brought for speeding offences, with the fines
and costs averaging £750 per case.
Water skiers in the designated area north of Brownsea
Island are also exempted from the speed limit.
At times you may see police launches, harbour patrol
launches, RNLI lifeboats and Royal Marines fast craft exceeding the speed
limit. All of these craft have permission to exceed the limit when on
operational tasks.
In the winter months, the speed limit of 10 knots is
relaxed in the Wareham Channel, Middleship Channel and North Channel. The
10 knot limit remains in force elsewhere in the harbour. Be aware
that in all circumstances you must obey Rule 6 of the International
Regulations on safe speed.
It is most important in such a busy harbour that you
take account not only of your speed but also the wash you are creating. Be
considerate to others and slow down if necessary to avoid
endangering or inconveniencing other users who may be more vulnerable to
your wash.
